5 Free Programs for Image Editing & Drawing
The Tutorials: As one of the world's most successful open-source projects, the Gimp boasts a large and active user base. There are thousands of free tutorials for the GIMP: go onto YouTube and search for "The Gimp" for hundreds of free tutorials on subjects like drawing a realistic looking lightsaber, drawing anime art, or changing eye color in a subject of a photograph. Or, if you like, go to Gimp Tutorials for written, step-by-step instructions on how to do dozens of fun projects, like creating a blood splatter or animated fire text. Your local bookstore may also carry some of the many excellent books written on The Gimp, as does Amazon. Highly recommended. For Gimpshop, simply use Photoshop tutorials. Need a quick graphic for that webpage you're designing? Want to create a quick sketch? Look no further than Tux Paint. It takes absolutely no time whatsoever to learn the program and begin creating high-quality graphics and drawings. Originally intended for use by children as young as 18 months old, Tux paint has evolved into the easiest way for adults to create graphics from scratch. Users can create very sophisticated drawings using filters, special effects, and a feature that allows a painting to looks although it was drawn in chalk, on the pavement. The program also allows users to save a sequence of drawings and play them back as an animation. There is limited vector graphic support. Like nothing else, this program transports you to your childhood finger-painting days summer days spent out on the front lawn using finger-paint! But it's also a serious graphics editor. But lest you think Tux Paint is only for children, check out this amazing gallery of original artwork created using the program. The Tutorials: There are a few dozen tutorials available on YouTube. The software is so simple that users haven't bothered to create many tutorials.1. GIMP (Windows, Linux, Apple)

The GIMP is king of the free artwork software world. Primarily designed for editing photos and graphics, the GIMP's standard setup is powerful but confusing for the newbie-it features three separate windows with a number of optional configuration tweaks. Happily, the GIMP it can be downloaded in a format that looks and feels just like Photoshop, called, amusingly, GIMPShop. GIMPShop even features a ‘Deweirdifier' function to make GIMPShop, a little...less weird.
2. Paint.NET (Windows only)

Paint.NET is simpler, easier, and less sophisticated than the GIMP. It offers users the ability to do almost anything with photos that an intermediate user might be interested in doing, including special effects, fixing damaged or faded pictures, and even conducting a "makeover" for the subject of a photograph. Paint.NET users can create simple graphics, and can even create a comic.
The Tutorials: Paint.NET users are part of a growing community that offers hundreds of YouTube video tutorials and tutorials elsewhere. There is a particularly large, categorized set of tutorials here, at Wikibooks, and a good set of beginner tutorials at Washington State University
3. InkScape (Windows, Linux, Apple)

InkScape is the best, and just about the only, free vector graphics editor. (Vector graphics can grow and shrink without loss of quality.) Users can create sophisticated graphics that match the quality of those created using InkScape's commercial rival, Adobe Illustrator. The program offers a feature that will automatically convert simple images to vector format, so that you can edit them within the program. It also works with the GIMP, even offering users the ability to drag-and-drop paths into InkScape from GIMP, and even images, from the GIMP history area. There's a great gallery of InkScape art over at deviantART.
InkScape is surprisingly business-friendly. Users can convert files to PDF format, so that they can be seen, but not altered, by viewers. They can also create charts and diagrams using InkScape that work perfectly for business use, and which are currently used within the Wikipedia project to draw flow-charts and diagrams.
The Tutorials: A few hundred tutorials are available at YouTube. Other tutorials, like the official "getting started" tutorial is here. More advanced tutorials can be found here, and here. Draw a Lamborghini Gallardo, or a samurai manga character, or make a great Web
2.0 Logo from scratch.4. Tux Paint (Windows, Linux, Apple)

5. Krita (Linux only, as a practical matter.)

Arguably the best overall application is Krita, though it is not quite ready for use on Windows or Apple computers. Where the Gimp is first and foremost a photo-editor, Krita is first and foremost a painting application. Krita is easier to use than The GIMP or even Photoshop, and it offers an excellent assortment of paintbrushes, gradients, a watercolor paint simulation, and even offers full, native CMYK color support-making it the best choice in our list for creating products that will be printed. And, it offers a solid selection of photo-editing tools, though not as extensive as those offered by the GIMP.
As an added bonus, Works with KOffice, a free software suite. This means that Krita drawings can be placed directly inside of, say, a letter you're writing in KOffice's word processor, called KWord. Future releases of Krita will feature even more helpful drawing features that will allow it to rival any software available-paid or free.
Put a Logo on a Shirt
Step 1: Step 2: Fill the layer with 50% gray-- this will be our designated "neutral" for the distortion.
Here's a great shot of a young man in a white t-shirt-- let's put a logo on his shirt, and turn on Photoshop's power with the Wacom pen to make the logo ripple with his shirt.
Create a layer above the t-shirt by tapping on the Layer icon-- we'll paint in this layer with the airbrush to create our distortion graphic.
Step 3:
Let's get Photoshop's airbrush tool set-- go to the Brush Dynamics icon at the top of your screen (or in the Options palette for those of you who are pre-6), and set to to Pressure: Stylus. Set the layer for 75% opacity-- that way you can see Tee Shirt Boy underneath.
Step 4:
Paint in your layer with black-- try to match the darker areas of the underlying image. The Wacom pen's pressure sensitivity lets you get as much or as little black as you want, merely by changing how hard you press.
Step 5:
Now paint in the white highlights-- go ahead and change the opacity up to 100% if you're curious how the layer looks. Don't worry about getting too exact-- here, close is good enough. Copy and paste the gray layer into a new document and save it as a grayscale image-- this is your distortion image.
Step 6:
Place the logo right in the front of the shirt. Go to Filter-- Distort-- Displace, and set your H and V scale to whatever you think sounds good (be prepared to experiment a bit here). Select the distortion image you just created, and hit Open.
Step 7:
You'll see a weird distortion effect-- change the layer mode to Hard Light and lower the opacity a bit.
Step 8:
Burn and dodge the logo layer for a little added three-dimensional touch, and there you go

Radical Car Body Painting
This tutorial deals with a unique method of changing the color of a car... call it body painting
Unlike traditional ways of changing a vehicle's body colour, this technique uses layer mask and various blending modes to preserve reflections making it extremely difficult for others to figure out if the image was digitally edited.
1. Open the image for editing, suppose:
2. Add a new "Hue/Saturation" adjustment layer (Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Hue/Saturation) and set the "Saturation" to "-100". Click OK.
3. Create a new layer as the top layer and fill it with the new colour of the car.
4. Set the current layer's blending mode to "Multiply" and add a layer mask (Layer> Add Layer Mask> Reveal All).
5. With the current layer's layer mask selected, use the eraser tool to erase the areas around the body of the car.
6. With the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer's layer mask selected, use the "Apply Image" tool (Image> Apply Image) to apply the following properties:
Source: filename
Layer: Layer 1
Channel: Layer Mask
Blending: Multiply
Opacity: 100%
Click OK.
7. Duplicate the top layer (Ctrl+J), set its blending mode to "Screen" and invert the layer (Ctrl+I).
8. Make a layer of the current layer's layer mask (Ctrl+Click on the layer mask). Use the "Apply Image" tool (Image> Apply Image) to apply the following properties:
Source: filename
Layer: Background
Channel: RGB
Invert: Uncheckmarked
Blending: Multiply
Opacity: 100%
Click OK.
9. With the current layer mask selected, use the "Levels" tool (Ctrl+L) and drag the black input slider right until the bleeding edges of the current layer is gone. Make sure that the "Preview" checkbox is checkmarked. Click OK.
10. Compare the this technique to traditional Hue/Saturation techniques. Rollover the image in this step to see the original image before this technique was applied.
Statuatory Warning : This tutorial is a little tough and those with patience & adequate knowledge could sail thru easily
Create a duotone picture
Well, It's a duotone pic with an xtra colors! Black, white & any other color.
We have seen black & white photos, we have seen color photos, bothhave their own advantages… B&W photos have more depth, Color photos are more vibrant.
So, I thought why not mix both these worlds & get a tritoneepic…
Didn’t get it… it’s a duotone pic with an xtra color…. Black, white & any other color.
Take a picture, preferably with a dominant color… nature pics are preferred.
Duplicate the layer (Ctrl+J)
Desaturate the new layer (Shift+Ctrl+U)
Go to the “background” layer (the color one), SELECT->COLORRANGE, SAMPLED COLORS, select the primary color (here “tigeryellow”) with the “eyedropper”, take necessary fuzziness.
Now that color is selected, copy it and paste upon the DESATURATED LAYER, making the yellow layer copied as OVERLAY blend.
GAUSSIAN BLUR to about 3 pixels.
Layer via Copy(Ctrl+J) if you want to enhance the color.
You can also Ctrl+J the DESATURATED LAYER in OVERLAY mode to add more contrast
Final adjustments, like levels, noise removal… give the desired result.
We can also make more tones this way

11 Online Photo Editors Sites
Online image editors are in a rage these days. Everyday, you hear about the release of a new online photo editor that claims to be the next big thing. From among the great number of online editors, we have hand picked some of the best ones that we found to be are noteworthy. With each site description, we have tried to tell you how or what feature of the editor forced us to include it in the list. Splashup, earlier known as Fauxto, is a web based photo editor that looks just like a desktop application. Users coming from Photoshop should feel right at home with this editor. You can open files from your computer or from all popular photo sharing sites. You can open multiple images in a tabbed environment. It supports the concept of layers, like Gimp and Photoshop. Splashup also has the ability to import images from your webcam. Relatively new into the arena, but have made quite a big fan fare in a short time. Pixlr described as Photoshop in a browser, continues to amaze many. It lacks features like importing from other sites like flickr, but you can still open an image by specifying its URL. If it’s from Adobe, it’s gonna be big. Photoshop express, apart from being an image editor, also acts as a photo organizer and online photo storage. It provides up to 2 GB of online space and ability to create and share albums which distinguishes it from other online image editors. Aviary is a suite of 4 tools among which Phoenix – an online image editor is the one which we are interested right now. Phoenix is a very powerful image editor that can be said as a true competitor for Photoshop, just that this one runs from a browser. The Phoenix page contains many videos on using it to produce some stunning photo effects. A.viary | Are your photos looking dull because of same post and same background? If so, you can try to apply some amazing effects through PhotoFunia to make your photos unique and fun. In short, PhotoFunia allows you to upload your own pictures and modify it into a selected effect without bells and whistles.1. Picnik
![]()
Picnik seems to be the most popular online image editor in this list. The interface of the site is beautiful, responsive and can put many desktop applications to shame. You don’t need to know anything about photo editing to use Picnik. Most noteworthy feature is its integration with other Web2.0 services. You can pull photos directly from most photo sharing sites such as Flickr, Picasa Web Albums, Facebook, Photobucket and pretty much provide any image URL to start editing it.
Picnik2. Splashup

3. Pixlr

4. Snipshot
Unlike the three editors mentioned above, Snipshot is not a flash based editor. It’s a highly responsive, Ajax powered image editor. So, this should be your choice if stranded in a computer having no flash plugins. You can import photos stored in your computer or from the web by mentioning its address. You can also import photos from flickr using a bookmarklet. Snipshot allows you to export and save your photos in a number of different formats - JPG, PNG, TIF, BMP and even PDF and Photoshop PSD.![]()
Snipshot5. Pixenate
Pixenate, formerly called PXN8 is a simple but intuitive application. With a straight forward interface, it lets you play with all its features relatively easy compared to others. You can edit photos stored in your computer or import from a web site and save also save the edited photo back to your flickr account. ![]()
6. Picture2Life
Picture2life is just another online image editor. But what makes it stand apart is the radical UI design for an image editor. Unlike all classical picture editors with toolboxes and a number of buttons, Picture2life has a descriptive side panel stacked into four vertical tabs – Quick Fixes, One Clicks, All and Featured. Selecting any tab replaces the sidebar with a new sidebar that contains a number of options like Brightness, Color, Contrast etc. But, instead of showing them as buttons, it takes your picture and shows you how the picture will look if the effect is applied and uses this as thumbnails for the buttons. Pretty useful for beginners who don’t know the difference between stuff like hue and saturation (and that includes us). ![]()
7. LunaPic
LunaPic isn’t as jazzy as the other image editors in this list. However, this one provides ability to convert your images to animated GIF files, which differentiates it from others. There are a couple of ready made fancy animation effects, that you can apply to your photo. This is an apt tool for creating your social network profile image – for Facebook, MySpace etc. ![]()
8. FotoFlexer
Want to have a Picasa running in your browser? Try FotoFlexer. It describes itself as the most powerful online digital photo editor in existence. If you are searching for a feature in online picture editors, then FotoFlexer has it. ![]()
