The Back Button Hack In Firefox To Reduce Memory Usage
Sometimes Firefox becomes quite slow because it uses caching to increase the speed of browsing while you click the back button. This actually results in using more memory. You can disable this feature by doing the following:
1. Start Firefox and type about:config and hit enter.
2. In the Filter column enter “browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers” and instead of the -1 setting, change it to 0 and hit Enter.
3. Restart your browser, now as soon as you start go to a particular site and then just check the Firefox memory usage, you’ll see the difference.
Open Multiple Homepages
Firefox supports tabs that are used to open multiple pages within a single browser window. You can also have the option here to open multiple home pages on individual tabs at once just
the way Internet Explorer 7 does it.
When Firefox starts up, only one tab is opened and each time you want to surf another site, you need to press [Ctrl]+ [T] to manually open a new tab and then type in the address. Here’s how you can customize Firefox to automatically open new tabs with your favorite websites on start up.
Open multiple home pages the moment you
open Mozilla Firefox or when you click ‘Home’
Select ‘Tools | Options’.
Select the ‘Main’ tab.
In the ‘Startup’ group, select ‘Show my home page’ from the ‘When Firefox
starts’ drop-down list.
In the ‘Home Page’ section, type in the name of of the sites you wish to open by separating each one by a ‘|’ (vertical line or Pipe).
Click ‘OK’.
The next time you open Firefox all these sites will load automatically.
Create a profile in Firefox
Every time we make a change in the settings and default configuration of Mozilla Firefox, these changes are stored and can be reloaded. This is handy to transfer them to another PC or maintain a backup of all our Firefox settings. Along with the Firefox settings, you can also store bookmarks and passwords. How?
The saved file is called a profile.
One can also create multiple profiles if and when necessary.
Before you proceed to make a new profile, make sure that you have exited Firefox.
Once Firefox is closed, press [Windows] + [R] on your keyboard to open the ‘Run’ dialog box.
Now type firefox.exe –ProfileManager and click ‘OK’.
Click ‘Next’ in the ‘Create New Profile’ dialog box that appears.
As the last step, enter a new Profile name in the dialog box and click ‘Finish’.
You don’t necessarily have to change the name. You can change the location of the
profile by clicking on the ‘Choose Folder’ button.
Your settings are now saved for future use. On clicking on ‘Finish’, your newly saved profile will be listed in the ‘Choose User Profile’ dialog box. These can be loaded later by following a similar procedure.
Firefox Speed Tweaks
Here’s what you do: Note that these are what I’ve found to REALLY speed up my Firefox significantly - and these settings seem to be common among everybody else as well. But these settings are optimized for broadband connections - I mean with as much concurrent requests we’re going to open up with pipelining… lol… you’d better have a big connection. Double Click on the following settins and put in the numbers below - for the true / false booleans - they’ll change when you double click. Code: One more thing… Right-click somewhere on that screen and add a NEW -> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0”. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives. Since you’re broadband - it shouldn’t have to wait. Now you should notice you’re loading pages MUCH faster now!
In the URL bar, type....
“about:config” and press enter. This will bring up the configuration “menu” where you can change the parameters of Firefox.
browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs – true
network.http.max-connections – 48
network.http.max-connections-per-server – 16
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy – 8
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server – 4
network.http.pipelining – true
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests – 100
network.http.proxy.pipelining – true
network.http.request.timeout – 300
